A blended whiskey (or blended whisky) is the product of blending different types of whiskeys and sometimes also neutral grain spirits, colorings, and flavorings. It is generally the product of mixing one or more higher-quality straight or single malt whiskey with less expensive spirits and other ingredients. This typically allows for a lower priced finished product, although expensive “premium” varieties also exist.
Some examples of blended whiskey include Canadian Mist, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Seagram’s Seven, Kessler Whiskey, the premium Japanese brand Hibiki, and the various Scotch whisky blends sold under the Johnnie Walker brand.

Famous Grouse Highland Decanter / 100 Years Wooden Box
This attractive decanter is gilded with 24 carat gold and depicts a ‘Summer in the Highlands’ by artist Stanley Todd.
This particular example was part of a limited 500 bottle release to celebrate the Centenary of the brand.

The legendary Famous Grouse as depicted by Royal Doulton.
A ceramic decanter from Royal Doulton containing 75cl of Famous Grouse blended Scotch whisky. We estimate this was produced in the 1980s. The single malt whiskies used in The Famous Grouse blend include the Edrington-owned Highland Park and The Macallan. Its emblem is the Red Grouse, Scotland’s national game bird.

A bottle of Famous Grouse housed within a ceramic ‘Highland’ decanter. First blended by Matthew Gloag & Son in 1896, as of 2013, it has been the highest selling brand of whisky in Scotland since 1980.
The Famous Grouse blended Scotch whisky, which has been allowed to marry in specially selected Port casks, a variation on the classic recipe that really comes through on the finish with notes of dark red fruits.
Ruby Cask is the second expression of The Famous Grouse’s Cask Series, which has been finished in Port-seasoned oak barrels. A soft and spicy twist on the classic blended Scotch with notes of dark fruits.
The Famous Grouse Sherry Cask Finish has aromas of cocoa, sherry, cherries and light oak. Sweet on the tongue by the Sherry tones, herbs and some fruit. The aftertaste is full of flavor with notes of chocolate and spices.
Speyside malts were matured in Sherry-seasoned, European oak casks to craft Famous Grouse Sherry Cask Finish. The blend has been in development for two years.
Sanele Gwala, global senior brand manager at The Famous Grouse, explained: “This new, revived blend is finished in Sherry casks and butts seasoned in the region of Jerez, Spain. The aim was to create a blend that is slightly sweeter but still in keeping with the smooth and distinct DNA of classic Grouse.
“Once the blend is in its final stages of maturation, which involves the meticulous combination of hand selected malt and grain whiskies, The Famous Grouse master blender does not stop there; the full blend is married in ex-Sherry casks to further enhance their sweet, rich, and smooth characters.
“The Sherry Cask Finish is a decadent blend of festive flavours including chocolate, almonds, dried fruits, and sweet spices.”
The packaging pays tribute to the Spanish female capercaillie bird, part of the grouse family. This particular bird was chosen for its link to the product’s Spanish Sherry heritage, as well as its orange and red plumage, which ‘echoes the deep amber’ of the liquid.
The Famous Grouse Smoky Black (previously The Black Grouse) blends more peated malt whiskies, including a rare version of Glenturret, with exceptional grain whiskies to produce a richer, lightly smoky and smooth flavour. Explore a smokier side to our Famous whisky.
A one litre bottle of Famous Grouse Winter Reserve, which was, as expected, a limited winter release unveiled at the tail end of 2018. The blend features a good helping of malt whiskies aged in sherry casks, imparting a classic spicy sherried character that’ll be sure to warm your cockles during the cold months.
