These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels that feature prominent figures from the whisky industry, tales from the histories of certain distilleries or even (in the case of their Aultmores) a Velociraptor fighting a shark! There are usually plenty of other little details for you to find too…
From April 2016 onwards these whiskies will be bottled with age statements and That Boutique-y Whisky Company have been very clear about the reasons behind this move, still believing that flavour and overall quality are more important than age. It’s partly been driven by the interest of whisky fans, but is also part of their wholehearted support for the campaign for Scotch whisky transparency that John Glaser of Compass Box launched earlier that year. They’ve committed not only to introducing age statements (which tell you the age of the youngest component), but to list the breakdown of the various whiskies that make up each bottling as soon as the campaign is successful and EU legislation allows it.

Matured for eight years, entirely in oloroso casks, it’s packed with layers of sherried fruit, toffee ice cream, toasted almonds, and popcorn.

The label features an element from previous Boutique-y labels, a dartboard belonging to the bottler’s compliance team (or the ‘fun police’ as they like to call them). This right here is a 10-year-old single malt from an undisclosed distillery on Islay, with 25% of it having been finished in first-fill oloroso sherry casks, and bestowed the decidedly descriptive name Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire. If those four words (and three ampersands) aren’t quite enough of an explanation of what this expression is all about, here are a few more: stripped-back, smoky, complex, a bit sherried, balanced, coastal. Yeah, that should do it. Great for people who love uncompromising Islay whisky and sans-serif fonts.

Peat and sherry is a great combo, though sometimes it can be a bit like a shouting match between a foghorn and a washing machine full of pots and pans. Thankfully, this one shows off a welcome harmony between the two. It’s a marvellous variation of Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire, featuring the same smoky 10 year old Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was finished in them. The powerfully peaty notes at its core are mellowed by just enough sherry sweetness, making for a superbly well-balanced flavour profile.

What we’ve got is a superb Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, aged for eight years and boasting a sleighful of Yuletide elements, perfect for enjoying… Well, yeah, it’ll obviously be brilliant at Christmas, and any whisky fan will be thrilled to find a bottle under the tree with their name on it. Wormtub 10 Year Old
Fans of Wormtub whisky will be pleased to see another batch of its splendid 10-year-old single malt here! As with previous batches, Batch 5 of this spectacular Speysider is aged for 10 years, during which time, the whisky was reracked into a host of first-fill sherry casks to complete its maturation. What came out of those casks is the magnificently richly hued single malt you see before you, it was bottled without chill filtration or added colour at a bold 56.1% ABV. You read that correctly by the way, no added colour – that impressive hue is all from the cask!
The whisky is sourced from an undisclosed Speyside distillery that still uses a rather old-school (and rather brilliant) bit of kit – a worm tub condenser. These classic bits of distilling equipment are made up of long copper coiled tubes housed in cold water in a large vat. You don’t see too many of them around these days, with many distilleries having replaced them with more efficient shell and tube condensers. More efficient perhaps, but what is lost is the distinctive heavy, robust flavour profiles that can be achieved with a worm tub, and that are adored by distillers and whisky enthusiasts alike.

Worm tubs are a classic bit of distilling kit that can achieve distinctly characterful, heavy, robust flavour profiles. To ensure that remains the case here, this whisky has not undergone any chill-filtration and has no added colour, the vibrant hue you see here is all thanks to that glorious sherry cask!

It’s always easy to spot its bottles on a shelf, thanks to their colourful graphic novel style labels designed by Emily Chappell, and now those designs are celebrated in the limited edition Label Editions series. This single malt hails from Mortlach and spent 10 years maturing, starting off in a refill hogshead and finishing in a rum cask. The Speyside-based distillery uses a traditional worm tub condenser which contributes to the robust, muscular character of its whisky and in turn, the nickname ‘Beast of Dufftown’ which is rather terrifyingly depicted on the label for this limited edition 700ml bottle.
