Saint Cosme Chateauneuf du Pape 2016 75cl, 15.5%

Available : outofstock

Saint Cosme – located north to the village of Gigondas – is the most ancient estate in the region (evidence of a Gallo-Roman villa on the site date to 1416!). The diversity of soils and cool micro-climates encourages slow, even and late ripening of grapes. The dedication at Saint Cosme is total; they want to best express the extraordinary potential of the terroir. Years of experience, old vines and organic viticulture are also key contributing factors to the high quality of Saint Cosme wines and their elegant house style.

METHOD

50% Grenache – 30% Mourvèdre – 10% Syrah – 7% Cinsault – 3% Clairette from La Crau, Valori and Christia sites. The grapes are whole cluster fermented and aged for 24 months in previously used casks.  The wine is weighty, powerful and intense. In Châteauneuf, Cinsault and particularly Mourvèdre love the heat – they need it to express their complete fullness. In 2015 more than ever, whole cluster fermentation was a requisite – it added freshness, depth and complexity. The stem is part of the fruit and helps terroir expression.  Bottled unfiltered.

TASTING NOTES

An expressive bouquet of preserved red fruit, spiced cake, incense, garrrigue and a smoky minerality. The palate is silky, concentrated and energetic, with those same incense and spice-laced red fruit flavours and bright juicy acidity. Concentrated but graceful wine with a long, spicy and lightly tannic finish.
