Irish whiskeys are often thought to be smooth, fruity, and triple distilled and many of them are, but this isn’t the full story. The Irish are widely credited as being the first to distil whiskey, though this is strictly contested by the Scots. The Bushmills distillery, for example, is the world’s oldest licensed distillery, founded in 1608. The Irish are unique in their pure pot still whiskey.
Irish single pot still whiskey is a mix of barley, malted and otherwise, distilled in a pot still. The unmalted barley proffers a spicy freshness that one associates with Irish whiskey. Some of the Irish blends are global successes with Bushmills Original and Jameson both being notable examples. There’s also a healthy selection of single malt expressions, including the majority of the Bushmills range, Tyrconnell and Connemara.

Teeling Sommelier Selection Douro Old Vines Casks 7Ocl, 46%
Teeling’s classic Small Batch blend of malt and grain contains whiskey aged in rum casks, but for the Sommelier Selection that’s replaced with wine casks from around the world, hence the name. Expect some lovely dark fruit and spicy notes in a whiskey bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered.
Irish Reserve 26 Year Old (70cl, 40%)
A 26 Year Old Irish single malt whiskey specially produced for Aldi.
Another day, another long-aged Aldi single malt. An Irish whiskey this time, and once again I’ve elbowed my way past the natural Malt correspondent to chip in with my tuppence worth first.
26years, in Irish whiskey terms, is ages. A quick scroll through any of the obvious channels will yield hundreds of scotch whiskies of that age or older, but properly mature Irish is much thinner on the ground.
It’s brilliant to see Aldi move beyond Scotland when putting together their rare whisk(e)y offering for this year. Makes one hope that their gaze might turn upon the USA – or even Canada – in 2018.
