It’s been 100 years or so since the Jack Daniel Distillery released a whiskey of 10 years of age or greater. Evolving Jack Daniel’s past aged-stated whiskey process, these Tennessee Whiskey barrels have been aging in the Buzzard’s Roost of our barrelhouse, and methodically relocated to the lower floors of different barrel houses to extend the aging process for the last 10 summers. The extreme weather variation at different locations in the barrel houses along with longevity in our handmade oak barrels creates an intense, unique character of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

Jack Daniel’s is now fully committed to experimenting with their lineup. After spending decades churning out Old Number 7 and Gentlemen Jack, the distillery in Lynchburg, TN has finally decided to fully embrace the whisky craze and explore new and exciting expressions for their lineup. After winning praise for their Barrel Proof and Bonded products, it feels right that they are now exploring longer maturations. So, while typical Jack Daniel’s is aged for “at least 4 years”, what we are drinking today is aged for at least 2.5 times that – meaning we have a full 10 year age statement!

Jack Daniel’s debuted this 10 year product last year to raucous excitement, and have continued the fun this year with a second batch of 10 year and the addition of an even older 12 year product this time around. And while Jack Daniel’s 12 year, this 10 year is rocking a 97 proof. And honestly, that seems pretty reasonable in a world of wildly expensive limited editions.

Jack Daniel’s 10 year (Batch 2) is an impressive follow up to the highly regarded first batch of Jack Daniel’s 10 year. While I never had the chance to try that first batch, if it was anything like this one, I know why there was so much hype. The 10 years in oak has clearly made a significant impact on the spirit, taking that sometimes brittle Jack Daniel’s profile and creating a rich and deep profile with more oak, complexity, and a fantastic mouthfeel. The longer maturation has balanced the banana Laffy Taffy sweetness and has elevated the profile to an approachable, yet complex place. This is a great pour worth seeking out. The MSRP is spot on here, so anything close to it is an instant buy for me. So, while it isn’t as challenging as Jack Daniel’s Barrel Proof can be, this is a fantastic addition to the lineup and might have you rethinking your Jack Daniel’s prejudices.

The Bottled-in-Bond bottle first became available in the Summer of 2018 and is limited to select duty free stores around the world. Although it is only sold at select locations, this bottle was advertised as a “permanent line extension in the Jack Daniel’s Family of Brands.”

Created to honor its commitment to quality and pay tribute to the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, this bottle met all of the parameters outlined in 1897 which stated that the whiskey had to be aged at least 4 years and bottled at 100 proof at one distillery during a single season.

Introducing Jack Daniel’s 12-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey. The Jack Daniel Distillery is one of the most complete whiskey distilleries in the world, and we’re able to craft premium whiskeys in a way that honors our heritage while highlighting the modern-day world-class whiskey-making. To honor our distillery’s past, our Master Distiller, Chris Fletcher handcrafted these aged-stated whiskeys and evolved our whiskey process to achieve a rare flavor profile.

I’m certain I’m not the first to say this, but this bottle and its Bonded and 10-year siblings are all the proof one needs to be convinced that Jack Daniel’s is best at higher proofs. The 12-year is a whiskey of tremendous complexity, character and texture, and the 10-year (review forthcoming) is barely less arresting. This Jack is mannerly, wizened, confident and worthy of standing alongside any American whiskey on a back bar. It belies its shockingly modest MSRP.

The nose is that unmistakably fruity-acetone yeast note from Brown-Forman whiskeys–that curious combo of fresh orange, bubble gum, cooked stone fruit and Luxardo Maraschino liqueur that I love. It’s lush and floral on the palate. Every sip is a wave of warmth and flavor rocking forward with fruit and oak and back with pie crust, pipe tobacco and baking spices. Finishes are rarely at the top of my list of interests, but this one is long, just barely dry and pleasant in every way.

Admittedly, it didn’t hurt a bit to taste it at the distillery in Lynchburg (a must-visit if you’ve not been there) with master distiller Chris Fletcher, an unabashed fan of the 12- and 10-year. Watching a guy’s face–who’s tried this liquid countless times–slip into a long and satisfied grin with a few sips says a lot about what’s in the glass and how it commands a pro’s attention.

For what it’s worth, I enjoy Jack Daniel’s cask-strength releases and even those orange-labeled brutes from Coy Hill (the highest rickhouse on Jack’s campus). But this 12-year is my favorite of the family.

Jack Daniel’s Just Dropped a New Limited-Edition Whiskey Aged in Tequila Barrels

Jack Daniel’s Distillery Distillery Series selection #11 is a Tennessee Whiskey that’s finished in Añejo Tequila barrels. Bottled at 90 proof, it’s available in 375ml bottles  According to Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller, “this añejo tequila barrel-finished whiskey pushes the bounds on what people may expect out of a Tennessee Whiskey, yet still has the familiar characteristics that are uniquely Jack Daniel’s.

The Distillery Series, as you may have gleaned from the name, are whiskey releases that are available to purchase from the distillery (and also at a few select Tennessee retailers). These are smaller bottles (375 ml instead of 750 ml) that are also produced in smaller batches in terms of the actual liquid. Past expressions have included a Toasted Maple Barrel Finished Rye and a Straight Tennessee Whiskey Finished with Toasted Pecan Wood Chips. This new expression, selected by whiskey taster Danny Lamb, is classic Jack whiskey matured in new charred American white oak barrels for at least four years, and then finished in barrels used to mature añejo tequila (meaning it was aged for more than a year) for one year and seven months. Parent company Brown-Forman owns a few different tequila brands, so while it’s not disclosed these barrels may have been used for Herradura or El Jimador.

As one of the most complete distilleries in the world, we’re fortunate to have the ability to experiment with every part of the whiskey making process, and that’s what our Distillery Series is all about,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s master distiller, in a statement. “This añejo tequila barrel-finished whiskey pushes the bounds on what people may expect out of a Tennessee whiskey, yet still has the familiar characteristics that are uniquely Jack Daniel’s.

Selection #12 in Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series line of experimental whiskeys showcases the brand’s classic Tennessee Whiskey finished in Sherry casks for added complexity

Lynchburg, Tennessee (November 27, 2023) – The Jack Daniel Distillery introduces Distillery Series Selection #12, a Straight Tennessee Whiskey Finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks. The latest in the distillery’s line of experimental and innovative whiskeys features Jack Daniel’s classic Tennessee Whiskey with an additional layer of complexity perfect for the season.

Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series is available in Tennessee only and in limited quantities. Like all Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskeys, the latest expression has a grain bill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye and is charcoal mellowed before entering into new, charred American white oak barrels. Once fully matured, the whiskey was then finished in Oloroso Sherry casks for an additional three years.

“We first used Oloroso Sherry Casks with our American Single Malt, and it was only natural to continue experimenting with them to craft innovations that only Jack Daniel’s could,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “What resulted was something completely unique that further elevates the complexity of Old No. 7 but maintains a balanced profile. We can’t wait for our friends to try what we believe is the perfect sip for the season.”

The straight Tennessee Whiskey has an aroma of sweet citrus on the nose, which builds to a taste of rich baking spices, nutmegand caramel. It’s crowned with a lingering finish of notes of red fruit, achieved through maturation in the Sherry casks.

Selected by Whiskey Taster Randall Fanning, who recently retired after nearly 50 years with the brand, Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Straight Tennessee Whiskey Finished in Oloroso Sherry Casks is bottled at 90 proof (45% abv) and will be available in select stores in Tennessee and at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the Jack Daniel Distillery beginning December 2 in 375ml bottles.

Only a sip from our tasters can tell us that. And when you take a sip, we think you’ll appreciate why we do the things we do.

Launched in 1988, Gentleman Jack was the first new permanent product from the Tennessee distillery for many years. The whiskey is unusual in that it goes through Jack Daniel’s charcoal mellowing process twice, once before and once after barrelling, creating a softer and cleaner expression.

This is what is commonly referred to as the “third generation” packaging. The labels remained similar to that of the second release, however the bottle shape was squashed, giving a shorter, wider style. The third generation spans 1999 to 2006, when the familair flat bottle was introduced

The 7th and final bottle in the Gold Medal Series celebrates the most recent gold medal Jack Daniel’s has received, and perhaps the most prestigious. Despite the strict judging criteria, Jack Daniel’s came away with the institution’s top medal, the highly sought after Grand Gold Medal with Palm Leaves. This commemorative bottle celebrating that achievement was released in 2006.

Beginning in 1996 and continuing for the next 10 years, the Jack Daniel Distillery released its Gold Medal Series of commemorative bottles. Comprised of seven unique designs, each bottle in this series celebrates a different gold medal won by the Distillery. In the U.S., the series featured 750ml bottles filled with 90 proof whiskey. International markets offer these bottles only in a 1 liter size, with the exception of the first bottle in the series which was available only in the 750ml size.

This is the seventh in a series of releases from Jack Daniel’s to commemorate the gold medals awarded to the distillery. This bottling is for the medal won in 1981 at the Institut Pour Les Selections De La Qualite in Amsterdam.

This Bottle and the box are brand new…

In 1904 St. Louis, Missouri, was the 4th largest city in the U.S. and would become the host of what was informally known as the St. Louis World’s Fair. The theme of the World’s Fair was “Innovations and Inventions,” and exhibitors did not disappoint. In fact, many foods and products commonly used today were first introduced on a large scale to fair visitors. Such food items as waffle cones, cotton candy, peanut butter, and even Dr. Pepper were made popular as part of this exposition.

To celebrate his own Gold Medal victory, Jack created a special decanter to give as a gift to those who had helped make his award-winning whiskey. In 2004, for the 100th anniversary of the first Gold Medal, another replica decanter nearly identical to that of 1971 was released. This 1.75 liter decanter was also filled with 90 proof whiskey, but came in a wooden display box with a numbered hang tag.

In its 4th and final year, the 2014 Holiday Select bottle was once again released at the Distillery in December with a signing taking place on December 6th. While this bottle came in a nice sturdy black box like all of the others before it, this year’s box had an opening in the front which displayed the bottle proudly. Once again, each bottle this year was filled with whiskey from the barrels used to make the annual Christmas Barrel Tree. This year’s bottle was filled with 96 proof whiskey, a slight drop from the 98 proof available in 2013.

An annual holiday treat from Jack Daniel’s, their Holiday Select Tennessee Whiskey is matured in casks which end up creating their Christmas Barrel Tree at the distillery in Lynchburg. The 2014 edition is the first with Master Distiller Jeff Arnett choosing the barrels.

A limited edition Jack Daniel’s released for the Festive season of 2014. This was the fourth and final small batch version of the annual Holiday Select release, and as usual the whiskey was drawn from the same barrels used to build the distillery’s Christmas Barrel Tree that year.

Later editions of the Holiday Select were single barrel bottlings.

Although Jack Daniel’s is well known for its famous black label that appears on bottles all over the world, in the very early 1900’s the labels that adorned Jack’s bottles were not black at all. In fact, they were quite colorful and looked very different from the label we all know today. This new series, called the Legacy Edition Series, will showcase some of these old labels from over a century ago.

The first bottle in this series was filled with 86 proof whiskey and became available in the Summer of 2018 in both a 750ml (70cl internationally) size and a 1 liter size. Most locations received the smaller of the two, but the 1 liter version was available in Tennessee and at select duty free stores around the world.

Evidently, this particular design was the first time that Jack Daniel’s was mostly decked out in black – a style that continues to this day!

Jack Daniel’s motto was “Everyday we make it, we’ll make it the best we can”. For him, that meant filtering his whiskey drop by drop through a three-meter-thick layer of charcoal from the sugar maple. Seven generations later, the whiskey is still filtered the same way Jack did back then. The reason: Filtering gives it a distinctive mildness that has come to be expected from Jack Daniel’s. Charcoal mellowing makes Jack Daniel’s what it is: not a bourbon, but a Tennessee whiskey. This process refines the full flavor of the whiskey, even before it is fully aged in barrels, of Jack Daniel’s own manufacture. A laborious process that requires special attention and makes the production of the whiskey a little more expensive. However, any other process would not have met with Jack’s approval. Now the Jack Daniels is available packaged in a letterbox. Tasting notes:Jack Daniel’s, the iconic brand with cult status, has been produced in America’s oldest registered distillery since 1866. Jack Daniel’s is enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in a mix. Drop by drop, the brandy seeps through a meter-thick layer of charcoal, which makes its taste unmistakably round, mild and characteristic.

The origin of this decanter’s name dates back to the year 1859 when Colonel John Overton Jr. began construction on a new hotel in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Ironically, had it not been for a night out on the town, this hotel might never have been built…

Over the years, the Maxwell House Hotel became a well-known stopping point for famous people passing through the South. Lem Motlow knew of the hotel’s popularity and prestige and saw this as a business opportunity for the Distillery…

To celebrate the new partnership between Jack Daniel’s and McLaren, this limited special edition is released in the design of the McLaren Formula 1 team. An eye-catcher and a great gift idea for whiskey and racing fans as well as collectors.
In celebration of Jack Daniel’s partnership with McLaren Formula 1 team, own a piece of brand history – in a bottle. This limited edition bottle design for Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey commemorates the two pioneering founders behind each of these iconic brands – Mr. Jack Daniel himself and Bruce McLaren

In September, we reported on the new partnership between whiskey brand Jack Daniel’s and Formula 1 team McLaren Racing. And now the first quaffable example of this relationship has arrived in the form of a new special limited-edition bottle with a design that is both recognizable and new.

The whiskey inside the new Jack Daniel’s McLaren Racing limited-edition bottle is the same Old No. 7 you know and love—charcoal mellowed Tennessee whiskey with a mashbill of 80 percent corn, 8 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley, bottled at the standard 80 proof. But the new label and box are meant to honor the founders of both companies—Jack Daniel’s himself and Bruce McLaren. The Jack Daniel’s name was officially registered with the government back in 1866, while McLaren Racing was founded nearly a century later in 1963. Jack has become one of the biggest whiskey brands in the entire world, while McLaren was won many races, including 20 Formula 1 World Championships.

“McLaren and Jack Daniel’s are two of the most iconic brands known around the world, and we’re excited to celebrate our partnership with a special bottle that nods to our shared spirit of independence, authenticity and boldness,” said Jack Daniel’s senior vice president and global managing director, Sophia Angelis, in a statement. “We have been working with the McLaren team to develop unparalleled experiences for both racing and whiskey fans, and we can’t wait to share more on what we have in store.” “In our 60th year we are marking our team’s great legacy, started by Bruce McLaren,” added Louise McEwen, McLaren’s executive director of brand and marketing. “This limited-edition bottle is another fantastic way to share these celebrations with our fans, remembering both Bruce and Jack—two distinguished founders.”

This new bottle will drop in May, so if you’re a fan of F1 racing and Tennessee whiskey keep your eyes peeled—the brand says it will be available in “select Formula 1 markets across the globe.”

Jack Daniels Monogram with smooth silver top (oldest one) release 1998 proof 94 75cl

It is said that Jack Daniel served whiskey to his closest friends from his own personal fine glass monogrammed decanters. These decanters were reserved for special occasions and it was with this in mind that the Jack Daniel Distillery released the 750ml Monogram bottle in 2009. Filled with 94 proof whiskey, this bottle was sold with no hang tag, but came in an attractive silver and black box.

When it was introduced in 2009, the Monogram bottle was a limited release for the state of Tennessee only. However, even though 2009 was the first year this bottle was available in the United States, it was actually released internationally in 1998 and then again in 2004. While these are not considered different generations of this bottle to Jack Daniel’s collectors, they are definitely considered different versions.

The first release of the Monogram, bottled in 1998. This was initially only an export bottling, but was eventually released domestically in the US in 2009. Each version is being identifiable by its cap type.

Jack Daniel’s is the best-selling American whiskey in the world. Despite that fact it can legally be categorised as a straight bourbon, it has always shunned this title, preferring to market itself as a Tennessee Whiskey. These are similar to straight bourbons but have the additional requirement of having been filtered through maple wood charcoal, a practice known as the Lincoln County Process. History has not always given the distillery an easy ride though. Tennessee was an early adopter of Prohibition in 1910, and one of the last to repeal it in 1938 (five years later than the repeal at Federal level). Even today the distillery is still located in a “dry” county, meaning none of its products are sold in its hometown or those around it. The distillery was then only operational for four years before being forced to close again during the second world war. Ten years later it was purchased by the Brown-Forman corporation and its fortunes turned for good. Its classic black-labelled Old No.7 brand (named after the distillery’s original DSP number) is now a globally recognised product.

The presentation is based on the glass decanters that Jack Daniel himself is rumoured to serve whisky to his friends with.

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey commemorated its 155th anniversary in 2021 with a special limited edition design for its iconic Black Label Old No. 7 brand.  Pentagram updated the label with a swirl of typography and images celebrating the theme, “155 Years of Good Music.”

Designed by a team led by Paula Scher, the limited edition Jack Daniels label makes exceptional use of typography to communicate Jack Daniels’ ties to enjoying music. Scher’s unmistakable style shines through but doesn’t stray too far from the iconic black and white label of label no. 7. Signatures such as “Every Drop Made In Lynchburg, Tennesse” and references to awards no. 7, including the iconic bottle shape.

Jack Daniel ‘s Tennessee Whiskey No. 7 in the limited 2021 edition is a beautifully decorated whiskey whose label was designed by the successful designer Paula Scher . With this edition, Jack Daniels honors the long connection between whiskey and good music. It is filtered through a very thick layer of charcoal, as tradition dictates for a Tennessee whiskey. The whiskey is then matured in handcrafted oak barrels. There is no fixed maturing time here, it is only bottled when the Jack Daniels Master Distiller approves the product after a tasting. We offer the 0.7 liter bottle with 43% vol.

As is also the case with the Unaged Tennessee Rye, this bottle is technically not part of a series. Rather, it is the 2nd of 3 rye whiskey bottles that will be released by Jack Daniel’s. Other than this Rested Tennessee Rye, there is also an Unaged Tennessee Rye which was released in 2012 and an Aged Tennessee Rye which will be released at a future date.

Largely considered to be the finest of whiskeys, this bottle is not only a Single Barrel brand, but for a long time also contained the highest proof whiskey sold by Jack Daniel’s at 100 proof. The 1st Generation bottle (pictured) was produced from 1997 through 2010 before the 2nd Generation Single Barrel bottle took its place as the new look for Silver Select.

Jack Daniels Sinatra Select (1L, 45%)

Frank Sinatra was a long time fan of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and was often seen sipping a glass of it on stage while singing ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ or ‘My Way’. He even kept a stash of the classic whiskey on his private plane to enjoy while on the way to his next show, which would certainly beat a plastic cup of warm wine any day.

Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select has been created in honour of this friendship with Old Blue Eyes. The bold, smooth qualities of the Sinatra Select come from the specially made Sinatra barrels in which part of the whiskey was aged. Deep grooves were cut into the staves of the casks, increasing the amount of exposure the whiskey had to the wood. It is then married with Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 and bottled at 45% abv, which is how Sinatra would have enjoyed it back in the day.

So put on a Sinatra LP, sip some Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select and raise a glass to the man with one of the best voices the world has ever known.

Overall: Frank could easily have been looking into the future at the Sinatra Select when he sung ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’, but it’s here now for you to enjoy!

The Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel is whiskey which, in contrast to Old No 7, has been drawn from barrels which have sat maturing at the highest points of the Jack Daniel’s barrelhouses. At these higher points in the barrelhouses, just as in a second or third floor in a house, the temperature is likely to fluctuate more dramatically than at lower points. So, for example, during hot times (summer, the day) these higher points in the barrelhouses would likely be warmer than lower points, but during cold times (winter, night) these higher points in the barrelhouses would likely be colder than lower points. This means that barrels which sit at the highest points of the barrelhouses tend to be exposed to more extreme temperature changes.

Only one out of every 100 barrels are set aside to mature whiskey that becomes Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel.
