Most distilled spirits that are labelled as “whisky” in India are a form of Indian-made foreign liquor, commonly blends based on neutral spirits that are distilled from fermented molasses with only a small portion consisting of traditional malt whisky, usually about 10 to 12 percent. Outside India, such a drink would more likely be labelled a rum.According to the Scotch Whisky Association’s 2013 annual report, unlike the European Union (EU), “there is no compulsory definition of whisky in India, and the Indian voluntary standard does not require whisky to be distilled from cereals or to be matured. Very little Indian ‘whisky’ qualifies as whisky in the EU owing to the use of molasses or neutral alcohol, limited maturation (if any) and the use of flavourings. Such spirits are, of course, considerably cheaper to produce than genuine whisky.” Such molasses-based blends make up 90 percent of the spirits consumed as “whisky” in India, although whisky wholly distilled from malt and other grains, is also manufactured and sold.

This impressive Indian single malt is the delicious work of Amrut. The 2019 release of Greedy Angels was matured in oak casks for a whole decade before bottling at a generous 55% ABV. The liquid was presented in this rather elegant decanter, complete with glass stopper. The title comes from the Angel’s Share, the name given to the whisky that evaporates during maturation. Those angels can be greedy indeed, but they didn’t get their hands on this whisky!

Amrut Greedy Angels 10 Year Old is a rare dram and it’s an interesting expression to say the least.  This is the oldest Indian whisky and the limited edition release saw just 320 sets available across the globe – so it is a true collector’s item. The nose is fairly exotic with some banana, ginger and spiced oranges and if you add a drop of H2O you can detect apricots and coconut.

Amrut Fusion X is a collectable with just 1010 bottles released internationally to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Amrut Distilleries.

Amrut Fusion X (ten), a special, limited-edition single malt whisky was launched on the November 25 in honour of the 10th anniversary of Amrut Distilleries. This is the brand that put Indian whiskies on the global map and gave us Amrut Spectrum, Naarangi, Amalgam, and of course, Fusion.

In 2009, the late chairman and managing director, Neelkanta Rao Jagdale was high up in the mountains of Nilgiris in Ooty. Fired with the desire to create a whisky that was Indian in nature, but international in its profile, he worked with several samples of peated and unpeated malts at his summer residence in the hills, till he arrived at the mix that was to become the final character of Amrut Fusion.

On his return to Bengaluru, the production team got to work, and Amrut Fusion was launched in 2010. It went on to win three awards and was adjudged 3rd Best Whisky in the world by whisky-guru Jim Murray. As a brand, Amrut is currently present in 58 countries with a globally growing footprint.

The cap is unique and comes from Portugal. It has a sketch of Neel surrounded by a rangoli pattern. It also comes with an integrated NFC chip in partnership with Vlinder, which adds a great level of safety to your collectable bottle. Buyers can tap the NFC on the bottle and will know on their smartphones if the bottle has ever been opened. They will also be able to access a vast array of information about the whisky online.

Whisky lovers, we certainly hope you can add this bottle to your collection.

Here we have an Indian single malt from Amrut, titled Kadhambam, which means ‘mixture’ in Tamil, and you’ll realise why that name was chosen once you hear all about the cask maturation. It’s initially matured in bourbon casks, before being transferred into Oloroso sherry casks, then moved to brandy casks and, finally, into rum casks. Finally, the whisky was bottled at 50% ABV, packed with a pretty unique flavour profile.

Paul John 6 Year Old – Batch 6 That Boutique-y Whisky Company (50cl, 47.6%)

In stock
  • ( 0 Customer Review )

An Indian single malt whisky from the Paul John distillery, located in tropical Goa. Paul John distillery uses six row barley that is sourced from foothills of the Himalayas. The high fibre and protein content in six row barley, offers a distinct tannic character to the spirit. The tropical climate for maturation means a high angel’s share, 8-10%, as opposed to Scotland’s 2-3%. After just six years of maturation, around 40% of the cask contents is lost to evaporation. That loss would take around 24 years in Scotland! A cracking addition to That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Cinema Series, with a label that imagines James Bond, Bollywood style.

Batch 6 is a release of 175 bottles.
