El Dorado translates into English as “The Golden” according to Google Translate. Regardless of whether that’s a good translation, it is fitting for El Dorado rums with their delicious dark golden hue.

All the tasty spirits are blended and then aged in bourbon oak casks before bottling. This was rated the best rum in the world at the International Wine and Spirit Competition four years running, and for good reason.

Made from molasses, it was in finding a use for the byproduct of sugarcane, in the Caribbean, that Rum came into being. Every island has its own distinct style, with each of the island’s distilleries producing a further variation . While white rums readily form the base for a number of varied cocktails, dark rums, aged in ex-bourbon and cognac barrels, can take on great depth of flavour. They typically exhibit exotic, tropical-fruit aromas and a warm spiciness that, like any great spirit, is worthy of appreciating on its own.

El Dorado Port Mourant Uitvlugt 2010 Orange is a molasses rum from Guyana. It was distilled at Diamond, on the banks of the Demerara River, the only distillery still active in the country. This distillery has the particularity of having brought together all the stills of the old plantations of Guyana, which have now disappeared. Among these stills, the famous wooden pot-still from Port Mourant, and the 4 columns from Uitvlugt.

The assembly of these two “marks” (PM and ICBU) was carried out before ageing, hence the term “blended in the barrel”. Distillation took place in 2010, and the rum was bottled cask strength in 2019.
